New Seminar: Frameworks for Reorientation: Philosophical Counseling, Psychotherapy, and Coaching

What if “getting unstuck” isn’t one method but a set of frameworks you can learn to compare—and combine—on purpose? This discussion-based seminar examines how philosophical counseling, psychotherapy, and coaching each conceptualize reorientation: changing patterns of thought, feeling, behavior, and embodiment. Using the philosophy of orientation as our common lens, we’ll map what each approach actually does, what evidence or lineage it draws on, and where it fits best for real people in real contexts.

Reorientations—healing, transformation, change—have become central aims across counseling, psychotherapy, and coaching. Treated as models for methodic reorientation, these approaches provide distinct frameworks, methods, and tools that emphasize routines, communication, relationships, cognitions, affect, the (sub/un)conscious, meaning, and goals. Depending on the case, some approaches are better suited than others.

We will compare major theories and ask how the philosophy of orientation can itself guide practice and an art of living. Core readings will include:

  • Philosophy as a Way of Life (Pierre Hadot)

  • The Socratic Method (James Overholser)

  • Gestalt Therapy (Fritz Perls; contemporary précis by Dave Mann)

  • Jungian Psychotherapy (C. G. Jung)

  • Existential Therapy (Irvin Yalom)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Judith Beck)

  • Contemporary Life Coaching (with an applied case on Tony Robbins)
